Quantitative analysis of F0 contours of emotional speech of Mandarin
نویسندگان
چکیده
For emotional speech synthesis, a quantitative model giving a parametric representation of F0 contours is needed. Purpose: investigate quantitatively F0 characteristics of Mandarin speech in four basic emotions (anger, fear, joy, and sadness) and in neutral reading. Two approaches are compared: surface features analysis from time-normalized F0 contours analysis-by-synthesis of time-intact F0 contours based on the command-response model Model-based analysis-by-synthesis of F0 contours Tone commands in neutral read speech: each syllable should basically comply with the inherent command pattern for the particular tone type. in emotional speech: much more variation, but generally, the polarity of a tone command is rarely reversed. stressed syllables preserve tone command patterns better. Phrase commands largely aligned with major syntactic boundaries can be determined by comparison of syllabic F0 patterns and the canonical form of tones, by comparison of F0 patterns in adjacent tones, and also with the aid of prosodic perception. only assigned when necessary and linguistically meaningful Sentential F0 declination: the magnitude ranks as follows: anger > joy > neutral > fear > sadness, which also indicates active emotions > neutral > passive emotions.

Mandarin-Speaking Children’s Speech Recognition: Developmental Changes in the Influences of Semantic Context and F0 Contours
The goal of this developmental speech perception study was to assess whether and how age group modulated the influences of high-level semantic context and low-level fundamental frequency (F0) contours on the recognition of Mandarin speech by elementary and middle-school-aged children in quiet and interference backgrounds. The results revealed different patterns for semantic and F0 information. ...
متن کاملEffects of Semantic Context and Fundamental Frequency Contours on Mandarin Speech Recognition by Second Language Learners
Speech recognition by second language (L2) learners in optimal and suboptimal conditions has been examined extensively with English as the target language in most previous studies. This study extended existing experimental protocols (Wang et al., 2013) to investigate Mandarin speech recognition by Japanese learners of Mandarin at two different levels (elementary vs. intermediate) of proficiency...
متن کاملRule-based Generation of Phrase Components in Two-step Synthesis of Fundamental Frequency Contours of Mandarin
In this paper, a rule-based method was developed for realizing phrase components in our two-step generation of fundamental frequency (F0) contours of Mandarin. The scheme assumes (logarithmic) F0 contours as superposition of tone components on phrase components, which are further assumed to be responses of phrase commands. In general, possibility of a new phrase command comes higher at deeper s...
متن کاملMandarin Tones Recognition by Segments of Fundamental Frequency Contours
Mandarin is one of the tonal languages. In Mandarin tones, there are four lexical tones (tone 1 to tone 4) with four different fundamental frequency (f0), such as flat and high, rising, falling and then rising, and falling, respectively. In order to process signal on lexical tone, at first we have to identify which tone is. We would like to find out an efficient approach to identify Mandarin to...
متن کاملThe role of F0 variation in the intelligibility of Mandarin sentences
This study tested the importance of F0 variation for tone language comprehension. The intelligibility of Mandarin sentences with natural F0 contours was compared to the intelligibility of monotone (flat-F0) sentences created via speech resynthesis. In a quiet background, flat-F0 speech was just as intelligible as natural speech (about 94% intelligible), highlighting the robustness of the langua...
